Our philosophy

Hand to Hand Fitness and Massage is a health company that embodies each person’s capacity for giving and receiving, breaking and healing, yin and yang. We tear our bodies down so that we can rebuild into a healthier, stronger version of ourselves.

James Vanwert, the principal of Hand to Hand Fitness and Massage, served in the United States Army for 16 years. He is a combat veteran and physical fitness enthusiast with over two decades of teaching experience. He has trained service members and civilians, adults and children, large groups and individuals. He has years of experience competing, cornering fighters and judging competitions. In addition to his technical ability in the martial/combat sports, he is able to use his vast understanding of the human body to integrate various forms of yoga and calisthenics, giving a more comprehensive explanation of the movements. He is a licensed massage therapist and taught at the Port Townsend School of Massage.
